Frequently Asked Questions

Is it easy to do?

Take a look at this video, it really is this easy:

Why not just buy the jewellery?

It’s very easy to buy jewellery pretty much anywhere (even from us), but what you don’t get with a piece of off the shelf jewellery is the customisation. The piece is made by you, for you (or someone else). It’s personal, handmade, and the satisfaction you get for designing and producing your own fine silver jewellery cannot be underestimated. Take a look at some of the testimonials.

What is Metal Clay?

Metal clay or Silver Clay is a Plasticine like substance embedded with silver. It can be moulded with your fingers to almost any shape. It’s then dried to a semi-hard clay in a dehydrator, and then fired. This firing burns off the grey clay binder, and leaves you with a piece of 99.9% fine silver.

How long are the classes?

Classes are a minimum of 3 hours for the simpler workshops, to a maximum of 6 hours for the more advanced. Each workshop is over a single day duration.

How many in each class?

There are usually a maximum of 7, to keep the class small, and make sure Jackie can provide any closer attention necessary to sort out any problems students may have.

Will I be on my own?

Although the classes are small (on purpose), you can book with friends if you want. But either way, the experience of making jewellery will mean you’ll soon make friends with the others in the group.

Will I actually make the jewellery myself?

Absolutely. Jackie will take you through the process from start to finish. In most case you’ll fire the jewellery yourself to turn the silver clay into a beautiful piece of fine silver that you’ll take away at the end of the class. Depending on which class you choose, we may have to take your piece away to kiln fire it – there just won’t be time on the day, but we’ll post your finished piece back to you.

What’s included in the price?

We’ll provide you with all the tools necessary for the day, and a set amount of silver clay to make you pieces. There’ll also be tea, coffee, and biscuits provided, but you’ll need to provide your own lunch.

Students are supplied with enough metal clay to complete the workshop, but if you do require any more, we can provide on the day. Should you want to carry on making after the class you can also buy a starter kit of tools to get you going.

Where are the jewellery making classes held?

We currently hold the classes are 2 different locations – Inverness and Dingwall. Not all classes are run at all the locations. If you’re interested in a particular class at one of these locations, please email us.
